The science behind Raj yoga
By channeling the ego through the divine path one attains higher purpose and through that man attains perfection and liberation .
Through the power of concentration one attains the highest knowledge ,the knowledge of Universe .
But how can we be sure that by channelizing our ego through the divine path ,we will not lose our personalities?
What is a personality ,it is the feeling of "I" which causes and forms the layers in a personality .
Personality is relative in nature ,it can not become or feel eternal and fulfilled as the personality itself relies upon external factors which are subjected to constate state of flux ,as everything is changing ,forming ,breaking and again and again this process continues to be existent ,hence we are also bound to change as we too are physical bodies made up of the same matter ,which manifested the Universe . Hence ,we see that we are at basic physical level ,we are fundamentally same beings sharing same traits and likes and dislikes and as individuals our relationship with the world and Universe is ever relative .
At psychological level we are also relative to the world and it's appearances . Every name and forms of this phenomenological world appears to our mind differently .
Two persons may see and observe the same object ,but that object will appear quite differently . The difference will not be in terms of dimension ( shape ,size , configuration) but will differ in terms of interpretation of their subjective minds .
For example ,in desert one sees the mirage and other also sees that same mirage ,but where one sees it as illusion of the senses ,the other falls for it thinking it as being real.
Hence here at psychological level also reality appears as to be purely subjective .
But the real question is how we perceive this reality ,how we experience the world ?
How perception happens ? And what is it's true nature ?
First , external stimulations comes and stimulates the nerve of the senses ( five senses ) then that stimulation gets propagated through these nerves to the different centres of the human central nervous system and from the centre it tavel in the form of electricity carried out by the nerves at incredible high speed to spinal chord to Brain and then to motor neurons which controls the human muscles and tissues ,and hence through this process ,the nerves controls the muscles by directing it to strech or contract in accordance to external situations and this is how work is done by the body and by this process carried out by the nerve currents we perceive the reality as we know it .
So by contemplating on this fact ,we understand that electrical impulses ( nerve currents ) are responsible for perception of reality .
But the main question arises that why we all share subjective experiences called as individual experience ( in psychology called as Qualia) of the same objective reality ?
And the answer for this is the "comparison" mechanism carried out by our brain through memory . As new information gets in the brain ,instantaneously through memory the brain compared it to previous experiences and that's how perception occurs . For example ,if one child sees an ice-cream for the first time he wonders about it in thinking what is this thing ? By touching ,tasting ,seeing ,smelling that child eventually perceive that thing as ice cream and the " name " and " form" ( jointly called as" modification of consciousness") .
These informations and knowledge about external world gets stored in our conscious mind and subconscious mind .
From there our thoughts gets generated ,without conscious state of mind we can not form thoughts ,but most thoughts are generally gets formed by subconscious mind. Subconscious mind is nothing but that part of mind which controls our likes ,dislikes , identifications and our " ego" .
" Ego " is that which projects one's own individuality on external stimulations and functions through memory and creates one's own subjective mental world through which one works .
Hence we see that both body and mind are subjected to change and constant states of flux and can only function through relatives states of existence .
And hence body and mind are interconnected and coexists for one to function. Through mind ,body does work and by doing work ,we gain experience and those experiences gets stored in mind and creates ego (subjective mental image of oneself ) . And this in psychology called
" Body mind complex " .
The moment we realise this truth of body and mind ,we get the control over the body mind duality and through concentration can channelize this ego to higher conscious levels and gain power to transcend this ordinary reality . In the process of doing this concentration ,we often experiences mystical states and often gets some supra natural powers i.e" siddhis" which infact are nothing but power of our own minds manifests through different forms .
Hence we see that to gain control over the
" Body mind complex " and its psychic powers is the fundamental aim of " Raj yoga " .
And by controlling the mind completely we can achieve the states of " Samadhi " ( the state of mind where the modification of " names" and " forms " of its sense objects stops completely at will ) .
Swami Vivekananda during his lectures of " Raj yoga " i.e interpretation of " patanjali yoga Sutra" , during 1896 on American soil
London and newyork ) discussed these facts of human mind elaborately .
