Swami Vivekananda about " Brahmacharya" and sexual transmutation

Brahmacharya is an ancient Hindu practice which first introduced by Veda Vyasa  in chapter 234 of shanti parva in the Mahabharata praises Brahmacharya as an important stage of life necessary for learning ,then adds Grihastha stage as the root of society and important to an individual's success.

Brahmacharya in Hinduism literally means "conduct consistent with Brahman" or "on the path of Brahman". Historically brahmacharya referred to a stage of life (asrama)within Vedic Ashram system .

Ancient Hindu culture divided the human life span into four stages :brahmacharya ,Grihastha ,Vanaprastha and sanyasa . But not only in Hinduism but this holy practice also belong to Buddhism  and Jainism as well. 

now lets talk about this in detail .  "Brahmacharya" this word consists two words ,which are  "Brahma" and "Charya" ."Brahma" means ones own self , ultimate unchanging reality ,absolute consciousness ,much discussed in Upanishads ." Brahma "also the Vedic God of Creation Of this Universe  who represents the element" Earth "which one of the five fundamental elements which creates this physical or material  realm. But " Brahma' also   a representation   life forces which  governs this  material reality.  But in Advaita vedanta the word "Brahma" implies "Brahman" which means supreme Consciousness which is the "efficient cause " of this universe  and the word "Charya" means" Path" "occupation" or more precisely "A Way of Life".

In Ancient and medieval era Indian texts , the term brahma Charya a concept with more complex meaning indicating an overall Pursuit of life style which gives pure  knowledge ,spiritual Discrimination (Viveka)) and spiritual liberation. Brahmacharya is somewhat different from the word "Celibacy" which merely means non -indulgence in sexual activity .                                   But" Brahma Charya" is when a person completely controls his body and mind and can control his urges regarding sensual pleasures and this allows a practitioner to function on a higher dimension of life . 

But the process of "Sexual transmutation" is one of the  aspect  of Brahmacharya out of  all  aspects including  cleanliness, ahimsa ,simple living, studies , meditation and voluntary restraints on certain foods ( eating only Sattvic foods), on intoxicants and on a sexual behavior ( both sex and masturbation). 

now lets' talk in detail  on thoughts of Swami Vivekananda on Brahmacharya and Sexual Transmutation. 

swami Vivekananda  explains  how  when we restraints us from sexual activity in terms of body and mind ,the sexual energy transmutes into spiritual energy which called "Ojas" .

Swami ji says "All the forces that are working in the body in their highest become ojas .                    You must remember that it is only a question of transformation. The same forces that are working as muscular energy will be changed into ojas. That part of human energy is expressed as sex which is expressed as sex energy ,in sexual thought when checked and controlled ,easily changes into ojas .The great sexual force , raised from animal action  and sent upward to the great dynamo of the human system ,the brain ,and there stored up, becomes ojas or spiritual force .Of all the energies that are in the human body 'the highest become Ojas .                                 This ojas is stored up in the brain ,and the more the ojas is in a man' head , the more powerful he is ,the more spiritual and more intellectually strong he is .   it is only the chaste man or woman who can make ojas rise and store it in the brain ,that's why chastity has been always been considered the highest virtue . A man feels that if he is unchaste ,spirituality goes away ,he loses his  mental vigor and moral stamina. That is why in all religious orders in the world which have produced spiritual giants, you will always find chastity . ojas is that which makes a difference between one man and another. The man who has much ojas is the leader of men. ojas gives them a tremendous power of attracting power of attracting people. This ojas is real energy and in human beings alone ,this storage of ojas is to be accomplished.one in  whom animal  sex force has been transformed into ojas is god . He speaks with power , and his words regenerate the world."
